In regard to manuring, you should apply dressing of 25-37 tonnes per hectare of organic manure if the soil is not naturally fertile.

On lighter sandier soils they suggest a dressing of 840- 1120 kg per hectare of a 5 : 8 : 8 or 5 : 10 : 10 fertilizer before transplanting, with a top dressing of nitrogen at fruit setting, to which is added 56 kg of muriate or sulphate of potash.

The fruits are plucked by hand with a portion of the stem attached. In Georgia, USA, Dempsey and Brantley (1953) say that the first picking of pimientos for canning takes place when the fruits are fully ripe, 90-110 days after transplanting.

A fruit rot, known as ripe rot in the United States, where it is particularly serious on pimiento peppers in Georgia, is caused by Colletotrichum capsici (SO.) Butl. & Bisby.

Small yellowish spots appear on the ripe fruit, which increase in size during damp weather and become sunken and soft. Dempsey and Brantley (1953) state that it may be overlooked and only appear after the fruit has been held for several hours. According to Sastri (1950), the same fungus can cause a die- back of the plants in India. It is important to plant disease-free seeds. Control is the same as for anthracnose.

The infected plants are commonly girdled at ground level, causing sudden wilting and death. The leaves show dark-green spots which dry out. Dark water-soaked patches appear on the fruits which become coated with a white growth of the fungus; the fruits eventually wither and remain attached to the plant. The fungus can live in the soil so that rotation and plant sanitation are important.
