Characteristics Of Different Roofing Materials
Roof is one of the largest investment for any home owner. Roof is a protective covering for us and the interior of our home from all the external elements and the changing climatic conditions. But apart from that a roof makes your home look more attractive from outside. So, selecting the right kind of roof is very important. The factors that should be considered while purchasing a roof are : external appearance, durability, cost, life of a roof and the maintenance efforts.
A roof is important both from aesthetic and functional point of view. It is very important to have a good ventilated roof as it can prevent conditions like ice dams which can be very damaging.
Now a days you can even go for a more stylish roof design by using two different types of roofing materials. Like, copper with cedar shakes is a good combination. So, spending a little extra on the roofing part of your home can prove to be really fruitful in the long run.
In the last few years, many different roofing products with different shapes, size and texture have come up. So now-a-days there are many options to choose from. But, the most common one and a relatively cheap roofing product still remains the same i.e. asphalt or fiberglass shingles.
Wood shake and shingles bring a handsome, warm aesthetic to a home. Generally made from treated cedar or redwood cedar shingles that are machine cut and give a more uniform look whereas shakes are handmade to give a rustic appearance. Life expectancy of the shingle is generally between 10-25 years and can cost up to five times as much as asphalt shingles.
Tiles are another roofing type that is becoming popular now a days. They are found in the form of concrete or clay in many different shapes like round or flat. Advantages of this roofing type is that, it is fire resistant and can last up to 50 years or even more.
Slate, another type of roof which is really good in appearance. It can live the longest which around 100 plus years and the best part about this type is, it is a low maintenance roof and it is also available in variety of colors and textures but, is heavy weight and the cost is high.
Metal roofs offer a wonderful alternative to tile and slate with a lot less weight. This roof also poses no fire hazard and virtually no maintenance. But, yes this can be a bit more expensive than other roofing products but it is worth spending your money here.
