Creating A Backyard Bird Habitat Naturally

If you enjoy the singing of birds in your backyard you might wish to draw in more birds. They are a sight to see when you have a pair of cardinals, yellow finches, and the robins visit your yard. Let’s see if we can come up with a healthy backyard bird habitat for them and help keep them safe at the same time. It can be a real rewarding experience watching their daily activity and listening to them sing. The best way to get started is to realize that there are only three basic things that they need: food, shelter and water. Just like our needs. When you provide these you will soon have a family of birds nesting in your yard. They will give you many hours of enjoyment and entertainment.

Offering a variety of food is best. Many birds enjoy eating insects; they may also enjoy fruits and nuts. You can provide some of these things for them, but it could be costly over a long period of time. It is best if you would plant trees and other plants that offer the food they like to eat. Some suggestions are oak trees, cranberry bushes and sunflowers. Bird Feeders are another way to provide for the birds. There are different types of feeders and seeds to fill them. Large birds enjoy a platform feeder. These will hold fruits and nuts as well as seed.

For water, a natural stream or creek would be ideal; however this is not always a possibility. To solve the water problem, you can provide bird baths, fountains or even a man-made pond. The water source should be in an open area so the birds can watch out for predators like the neighborhood cat.

If you have a lot of trees and shrubs then shelter for your birds is taken care of. However, if this is not available in your backyard, you can provide bird houses to help protect the birds from the elements and also to create a safe nesting area. Remember, different birds like different types of housing, so make sure you choose the bird houses appropriately and place them far enough away so you do not cause a territorial fight between nesting families.

It is fun to watch what happens in the backyard bird habitat that you have provided for them. It is nice to know that you have made a difference in their life and you can give back for all the pleasure that they give to you everyday. Enjoy your bird habitat.
