A garden is a great hobby to get you outside in sunshine while improving the environment. You do not have to wait until spring to get started on the flowers you want to grow. Purchase packets of seeds to start indoors and will be ready to plant in the spring. You will need containers, seed packets, something to dig with, mulch and landscaping edging.

If you prefer to use seeds, they can be planted in small containers and grown indoors until spring. When spring planting time arrives you would simply transplant the plants into your outside garden area. Buy the seeds early enough for them to grow strong and able to be transplanted. They should be placed in small containers with good drainage to prevent any fungus or mold developing on them.

When picking out your seeds remember to read the packets and determine if they need a lot of sun, shade or both when planted in a garden. There are many beautiful flowers that will grow well in shade areas, so do not let this prevent you from enjoying a garden.

After planting the seeds in appropriate containers, place them in an area that gets plenty of sunshine or purchase an inexpensive alternate lighting source. If the containers are in a window they should be turned often to provide sunlight to all areas of the plant.

It will take a few weeks for the seeds to spout and become plants so do not get frustrated if there are no plants blooming in only a few days. The seedlings will be approximately six inches tall when the get planted outside.

Dig a hole approximately six inches deep for plants. Place plant in the hole and cover with dirt. Sprinkling in soil that has purchased with added nutrients will help the plants get the nutrition needed for strong growth.

Once you have all of the plants in the garden, mark the area with small markers to be able to identify what has been planted in each area. This is important if you have planted flowers requiring extra feedings so that it is only put in this area. After placing the markers, spread mulch throughout the garden. The mulch should be two inches thick. If you have decorative items put them in the garden next.

The final step is to edge around the entire outside of the garden. In the edged area put landscaping edging of your choice, this could be a solid piece of plastic or a garden fence. The edging will prevent the flowers and mulch from shifting outside of the garden when being watered or during heavy rain. Remember to keep the garden weeded, watered and fed on a regular basis.
