I fell in love with the effects of outdoor lighting at a wonderfully romantic restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. As I recall, the restaurant was called Cafe Des Artistes. We sat in the garden amongst whimsical art sculptures while carefully placed outdoor patio lights snaked up and down the trees. It was likely the first time I had seen rope lights before. I was enchanted. Since that night I have eaten in many other romantic restaurants and have admired the outdoor lighting but nothing compares with my first experience.
At my own house, I have tried to replicate the feel of bringing the indoors out which is what properly placed outdoor patio lights should do. I have met with moderate success and I love to experiment. In choosing your outdoor lights there are a number of things you should always consider. I have tried to list the 4 most important considerations below.

Installing solar garden lights is similar to many home improvement projects in that the likelihood of a successful end result is related to how well the objectives are defined in the first place. So consider what it is you’re trying to achieve – courtesy lighting for yourself and visitors, security lighting to deter intruders, a place to entertain or simply bringing the garden to life at night?
You might of course choose any or all of the above plus a few other ideas of your own, which means you will also have to figure out how to balance various competing demands on your solar lighting layout. So you can see then that specifying your various objectives upfront makes it a whole lot easier to divide your outdoor spaces into discrete zones and identify suitable light fittings.
Solar deck lights for example won’t deter many intruders (though these highly versatile little devices will function very well in many situations such as path or drive markers). Equally you probably don’t want bright floodlights on your entertaining areas, and while low level coloured lights look lovely as decorative features in the garden they won’t help your guests see what they’re eating or drinking.

Everybody enjoys Christmas. It is a time to get together happily with friends and family while avoiding the cold and dark outside. By putting up Christmas decorations and lights we create a beautiful atmosphere that people of all ages enjoy. Nowadays many families are worried about the rising cost of their electricity bills. To ensure that the Christmas season doesn’t unduly add to the burden, you can now install solar Christmas lights. Over the last couple of years these have found favor with many families throughout the country.
These solar lights appear the same as ordinary Christmas lights. In fact the only difference is that you do not have to connect them to the power supply of your home. They come with solar cells and a battery which are used to power the bulbs and LEDs.
You may think that in winter the sun does not shine enough to provide power for solar lighting, but today’s solar cells can function even on a cloudy day. As the energy is stored in one or two batteries the lights will shine brightly throughout the night.

It’s always around this time of the year that I appreciate the design elements of our outdoor lighting scheme. The days are getting shorter and I find that I am turning on our outdoor lights slightly earlier each day. The result of decent outdoor lighting is that we can still use our outdoor space into late August and September.
During the earlier summer months my backyard was a functional and safe place to socialize and relax without resorting to outdoor lights. Where I live the sun can still be shining until 9.30pm. In fact, during the month of June the skies became dark and the backyard becomes too dark to be safe right around the time I wanted some BBQ guests to leave so it worked out perfectly.
We started to create our outdoor lighting scheme about 5 years ago. My spouse and I were charmed by the simplicity and beautiful effect of the outdoor lights of a French restaurant we visited in Mexico. Since that time we have experimented with many different types of outdoor lighting designs. Our scheme is a work in progress and it gets refined each year. Some years we use a lot of string lights while in other years we use spot lights and twinkly lights. We generally tend to stick to white lights although we sometimes use the odd colored spotlight.

Solar garden lights provide homeowners with an effective way to light up their garden at night, without the need to run pesky wires. There are several types to suit the landscape, type of flowers in the yard and garden size. They use sunlight to power solar modules which store the power in batteries and in turn convert this energy into light during hours of darkness. Solar powered yard lights work in the same way as any other solar powered lighting but obviously differ in purpose – they are used to bring light to the yard after dark.
Solar powered landscape lights come in many different forms. They vary in the shape of the cells, the material out of which the housing is made, and the base. Many of these lights are manufactured from plastic; others from aluminum. The style you ultimately buy will depend on your needs. We will now take a little look at the various types of solar powered landscape lights we have and how each of them will fit into your landscape plan.

Have you ever thought about installing an outdoor spot light? It is easier than you thought and these lights serve more purposes than originally thought. Most homes or business establishments that have outdoor lighting schemes can benefit from the installation of outdoor spot lights. Outdoor spotlights have a number of different purposes ranging from providing extra security, high-lighting pathways, providing extra safety, and providing a nice form of ambiance. Properly positioned spot lights are a wonderful addition to any outdoor lighting scheme.
Initially, when we think of spot lights we picture figure skating events or rock concerts. At least that is what comes first to my mind. These days the use of spot lights has transcended the historical uses and now you can find spot lights in many different locations. These lights are regularly used in commercial spaces, industrial spaces, urban spaces, and residential spaces.
Spot lights are often confused with flood lights. These two types of lights are different and serve different purposes, however, they posses some overlapping similarities. The most obvious similarity between these lights is that they are generally installed at a significant distance from the subject matter they are intended to illuminate. The most obvious difference between the lights is the focus of illumination. Flood lights disperse the light and light up a large area such as a parking lot. Spot lights narrow the focus of illumination and target a small area of illumination such as a person.

If you take the time and put a lot of effort to really thinking about your garden lighting design you can transform your garden into a great social area for the evenings too whether it is for evening barbecues or just to have friends round and sit outside admiring the view with a few bottle of wine, garden lighting can really make a difference.
Although it is hoped that you will spend a lot of time designing your garden lighting scheme it is also hoped that you will give equal attention to the security and safety aspects of outdoor lighting. You should always keep these two extra aspects of your design at the forefront of your mind when developing your outline.
Another safety feature that garden lights can bring is security from intruders. Proper lighting assists with the security of your home and can deter any bugulars from seeing your home as a target.
Quite popular nowadays are low-voltage outdoor lighting set-ups. These systems by and large come complete with a step-down transformer. A large range of low voltage fixtures are available to achieve diverse lighting results. Solar garden lights especially have greatly improved over recent years. Solar outside lighting is one of the easiest and low-cost methods to make your dwelling and garden safer and more beautiful.

Almost anybody who has a yard or a garden has at one time or another wanted to install decorative lighting. When they’re selected and installed properly, lighting up a garden with solar lights can add a touch of style and class. Also, any walkway will benefit from the beauty and attractiveness of such lighting. Small gardens in a back or front yard, too, can derive a benefit. And today, they’re easier to install than ever before.
Lighting up the yard used to be expensive. Back before new solar power technologies were developed, a person had to dig trenches, and pay for pricey electrical conduit piping. Also, power had to be run from the house to every light in the yard circuit. Maintenance could be a hassle, and the home’s electrical energy bills would certainly increase. The advent of stand-alone solar lighting units which can be added where needed has changed all that.
Improve the appearance of a yard and save electricity. The market is flooded with all manner and style of solar lighting and light packages. It’s more a matter of picking out the most attractive and best set-up for the individual yard or garden layout. Of equal benefit is the fact that all the energy to be drawn comes in a limitless supply from our sun. And there’s almost no upkeep involved after installation.
